Crocheted Pangolin

I crocheted this pangolin free hand.  I seriously doubt I will ever write the pattern, this project was about 60% fudged, 20% dumb luck and 20% evil genius.

The yarn was Red Heart Boutique Unforgettable in the color Echo.  Never use this yarn for a free hand project.  It does not frog well.  I do like the finished object and I really like the subtle color gradations.

This was made for a contest, wish me luck!

[updated 5/9/14- Sadly my pangolin did not win, but it was so fun to make and super cute]
[update 10-18-19] This pangolin inspired Pernille Heelsberg to write up the pattern.  Now you can make your own pangolin friend!

I tried to lure my cat into the photo with catnip.  That did not work out well for me.

  1. Hoppin over from hookin on hump day. I had to stop in because this guy is just so cute! I'll be honest, I had to look up a pangolin, I've never heard of one, but now that I have I want one, haha.

  2. A shame you won't be writing a pattern, this is really cool! Been thinking about attempting a crochet pangolin myself, and I can kind of figure out the direction you went here. The crocodile stitch was a clever touch!

    1. I would be willing to talk you through my process but the written pattern would be a nightmare. I tapered the crocodile scales so each row of scales is differently sized. I started at the tip of his tail with little scales, slowly I made them bigger by going from sc to hdc to dc to tr and also added more stitches to make them fuller. I worked in a spiral so the upper portion is scales and the under belly is sc or hdc. Once it grew wide enough I made the body, then started tapering down for the shoulders and neck. The head was made separately starting at the tip of the snout. The smallest scales on his head are shallow popcorn/bobble stitches. Stuff and sew on the head and legs. check out http://www.ravelry.com/projects/katie42/pangolin to see some in progress photos

  3. I love this! Would you be willing to make one as a commission? If so, how much would you charge?

    1. I'm glad you like my little guy so much. I don't sell any of my creations at this time. Another designer wrote a pattern for a similar item http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/pangolin-amigurumi Perhaps she may or allow her pattern to be made for sale.

  4. Hi Katie,
This is an amazing piece, can't believe you didn't win anything! I'm thinking about trying to make something similar, as my partner is a big pangolin fan :) I like the way your scales are different sizes; the pattern you refer to doesn't seem to have done this or at least not to the same extent, so I may just have a stab at it myself. Could you give me a little pointer please? I'm trying to work out how you managed to make the crocodile stitches in such a way that there are no holes for the stuffing to come through. Was there a special trick you used to ensure the stuffing didn't show?
Thanks for sharing your lovely work :)

    1. There is a bit of a hole, I think the yarn hides the holes well. it is a thinner yarn and it is also a bit fuzzy so the hole is less noticeable. I also did not stuff it very tightly, just enough to fill it out.

  5. Wow, your pangolin is stunning!! It really looks like one. I understand the pattern would be a disaster to work out, but this is more of a freeform thing! Absolutely gorgeous!
