Rainbow Swirl Bonnet

I had so much fun making the Rainbow Swirl Hat that I wanted to make a bonnet version.  Make this bright and colorful bonnet for your fun little girl.

Rainbow Swirl Bonnet

Each round will begin with working with red, then each color in turn, finishing with lavender. With so many working yarns, you may have tangles. Mostly the yarns are just twisted, spinning your work in the opposite directions is usually all that is needed. I recommend untwisting and untangling your yarns at the end of each round to prevent a unmanageable tangle.

When you leave a color, be sure to pull up a long loop to prevent any stitches from being pulled out during handling. When you pick that color up again, make sure the long loop is tightened back down onto the hook to ensure the proper tension.

The first 9 rows are exactly the same as the Rainbow Swirl hat which has a video that may be helpful as you make this bonnet.  Click here to see the video on YouTube

This pattern uses US crochet terms.  If you have any questions about this pattern, leave a comment and I will do my best to help you.

You will need less than 1/2 ounce of worsted weight yarn in red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple and scraps of white for the edging and ties.  Size G crochet hook will make a 6 month size and H hook will give you 9-12 month size.

Rainbow Swirl Bonnet

  1. With red, make a magic loop then 1 sc, 1 hdc, pull up a long loop. Join on orange, ch 1, hold the short tail against the magic ring hiding the short tail as you work, work 1 sc, 1 hdc, pull up a long loop, repeat step with the remaining colors in order, yellow, green, blue, purple.
  2. Pick up red, work 2 hdc into the orange sc, pull up a long loop, repeat with each color in turn.
  3. Pick up red, work 1 hdc in the first orange st, 2 hdc in the next st, repeat with each color in turn.
  4. Pick up red, work 1 hdc in each of the next 3 st, repeat with each color in turn
  5. repeat step 4
  6. Pick up red, work 1 hdc, then 2 hdc, then 1 hdc, repeat with each color in turn
  7. Pick up red, work 1 hdc in the next 3 st, 2 hdc in next st, repeat with each color in turn
  8. Pick up red, work 1 hdc in the next 2 st, 2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next 2 st, repeat with each color in turn
  9. Pick up red, work 1 hdc in next 5 st, 2 hdc in next st, repeat with each color in turn.
  10. Pick up orange, work 1 sc, then 1 sl st, fasten off, repeat with each color except red.
  11. Pick up red, work 1 hdc in each stitch all the way around, over the orange, yellow, green, blue and purple, work 1 sc in the last lavender st, then work 1 sl st in the next (red) st, fasten off red.
  12. Skip 7 st, in the 8th st, join on orange, 1hdc in the same st, 1 hdc in each st around, fasten off orange
  13. turn work, join on yellow, work 1 hdc in the same st and in each st around, fasten off yellow
  14. repeat step 13 with green, blue, purple, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple.
  15. To finish: Turn, join on white, 1 hdc in the same st and in each st around, ch 45, sl st in 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch back up the tie, sl st into the bottom edge of the bonnet.  Continue a sc border around the bottom edge, putting 1-2 sc in the end of each row.  Once you finish the sc border along the bottom edge and you are back to the front edge, ch 45 and sl st into the 2nd ch from the hook and in each chain back up to the bonnet for the 2nd tie.  Sl st back into the bottom edge of the bonnet, ch 1, sl st into the first hdc of the border to join the round.  Fasten off and weave in ends.

Baby Teether Toy

My baby loves playing with crochet swatches so I made a few toys just for her.  Made with cotton yarn, these toys can be wet and frozen to give cool soothing relief to sore gums.  Your baby will love the bright contrasting colors and textures.

You only need scraps of cotton yarn such as Sugar 'n Cream.  I used a size G crochet hook but you can use any similar sized hook.

This pattern uses US crochet terms, if you have any questions about this pattern, leave a comment and I will do my best to help you out.

Breakfast Burritos (For the Freezer)

Breakfast burritos are great on the go.  You can prepare a bunch in advance and keep them in the freezer for a quick and easy breakfast.

Ingredients:
12 eggs beaten
1/2 pound of bacon
2 cups of 1/4" diced potatoes
1 cup of finely chopped onions
salt and pepper to taste
8 fajita sized tortilla.  I use Chi Chi whole wheat tortilla because they don't become brittle after freezing and reheating.

Fry the bacon until crisp and drain away most of the fat.
Fry the potatoes for about 10 minutes until cooked through and browned.
Add the onion and cook another 1-2 minutes until they are softened.
Add the eggs and stir continuously until the eggs are set.
Cool the egg mixture.
Assemble the burritos using 1/2 cup of the filling in each tortilla.
Wrap the burrito in foil, label and freeze

To reheat: place the foil wrapped burrito in the oven or toaster oven at 400 degrees F for about 15 minutes or remove the foil and microwave on high for 2 minutes, turn over and cook another 2 minutes.

Serve with hot sauce or salsa.

Rainbow Swirl Hat

Rainbow Swirl hat pattern and tutorial.  Have the bleak and grey days of winter got you down?  Try a splash of color or a whole rainbow of colors.

This hat is made with all six colors attached to the work at the same time.  By spiraling the colors on top of each other you can get lots of multicolored stripes with minimal tails to weave in at the end.

This pattern uses US crochet terms.  If you have any questions about this pattern, leave a comment and I will do my best to help you out.

For this hat you will need 1/2 ounce of 6 different colors of worsted weight acrylic yarn.  You will also need a size H crochet hook, a yarn needle, and a pair of scissors.

Rainbow Swirl Hat

Note: In this pattern your colors will chase each other around and around. You will not join rounds with sl st, you will not turn the work, the stitches will spiral around for the entire hat. The red stitches will be worked into orange stitches, the orange will be worked into yellow and so on.

  1. With red, make a magic loop then 1sc, 1hdc, pull up a long loop. Join on orange, ch 1, hold the short tail against the magic ring hiding the short tail as you work, work 1sc, 1hdc, pull up a long loop, repeat step with the remaining colors in order, yellow, green, blue, lavender
  9. Pick up red, work 1 hdc in next 5 st, 2 hdc in next st, repeat with each color in turn
(Skip to row 13 for child size)
  10. Pick up red, work 1 hdc in next 3 hdc, 2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next 3 st, repeat with each color in turn
  11. Pick up red, work 1 hdc in next 7 st, 2 hdc in next st, repeat with each color in turn
  12. Pick up red, work 1 hdc in next 4 st, 2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next 4 st, repeat with each color in turn
  13. pick up red, work 1 hdc in each of the next 10 st (7 st for child size), repeat with each color in turn
  14. Repeat the previous row 18 times (13 times for child size)  or until the hat is a long as you like.
  15. Your colors should still be evenly spaced around. If they are not, add a few stitches to make them even. For each color sc in next st, then sl st in next st and fasten off
(Optional border) Join on border color in any stitch and ch 1. 1hdc in each st around, sl st in beginning st to join. Fasten off, weave in ends.

Sloppy Joes

Today I have another easy recipe which also freezes beautifully: Sloppy Joes.  My family does cheat a little on the sloppy, we eat our with a fork and knife... and a napkin.

This recipe is a great one to have in the freezer.  Its not hard to make, but letting it simmer for at least 30 minutes is the key to the most delicious sloppy joes.  If you'd rather use that 30 minutes doing something else on a busy weeknight, then make a big batch ahead of time and freeze individual or family size portions.  Then when dinner time rolls around, just heat and eat!

Classic Sloppy Joes

4 servings

1 pound ground beef
1 green bell pepper chopped
1 medium onion chopped
1/2 cup ketchup
1 TBSP yellow mustard
1 tsp sriracha sauce
Salt and pepper to taste
Hamburger buns or sliced bread, toasted

Spiral Mittens Pattern and Tutorial

Here is the adult version of the spiral mitten.  Check out the Baby Spiral Mitten pattern in case you missed it.

This is a multi sized pattern with adjustments in the pattern and video tutorial.  Use the first adjustment for small, the second for medium or the third adjustment to make the large.

This pattern is written with US crochet terms.  I used Bernat Super Value and Red Heart Super Saver yarns, which are medium worsted weight, and a size H crochet hook.  You will also need a pair of scissors, a blunt yarn needle and a measuring tape or ruler.

If you have any questions about this pattern, leave a comment and I will do my best to help you.

Spiral Mittens

This is a multi sized pattern. Small/child size, medium or large.

  1. In color A ch 5, skip 1st chain from hook, 1 sc, 1hdc in top loop of 2nd chain from hook, 1 hdc in the top loop of the next 2 ch, 2 hdc in top loop of last st, pull up a long loop to prevent your stitches from being pulled out during handling
  2. Turn your work upside down and join on color B into the other loop of the last stitch you worked into, ch 1, 1 sc, 1hdc in the same st, 1 hdc in other loop of the next 2 ch, 2 hdc in other loop of the last st, pull up a long loop
  3. Pick up color A, pull the working yarn until the loop is snug around your hook, 3 hdc (increase made) in the sc of color B, 1 hdc in each stitch down the long edge, pull up a loop
  4. Pick up color B, place 3 hdc in sc of color A, 1 hdc in each stitch down the long side.
  5. Continue spiraling, placing 1 hdc in each stitch and placing 1 increase in both short ends of each row. To find the stitch you will increase in, hold your foundation chain straight up and down and locate the stitch directly above the chain, this is the stitch in which you will put your 3 hdc increase.
  6. Continue in this way until you have (20, 24, 28) st, then continue with 1 hdc in each stitch until the mitten is (4, 5, 6) inches in total length.
  7. Keeping the foundation ch straight, flatten the mitten, hdc until you are (1, 2, 3) stitches away from one edge, ch (6, 8, 10) st, skip (2, 4, 6) st and hdc in next st and in each of the next 5 st. When you come over top of the chain in the other color you will work 1 hdc in each ch then in each hdc as before
  8. After the thumb hole is complete you will begin decreases on the short ends to taper back down for the wrist. To decrease you will work 1 hdc2tog on each short end of each row until you have (16, 20, 24) st. To work hdc2tog: yo and insert hook into the first st, yo and pull up a loop, yo and insert hook into the next st, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through all loops on the hook. Finish with colors ending opposite each other. To fasten off you will work 1 sc on the next st, then 1 sl st in the next st, and fasten off.
  9. Join on cuff color in any st along the bottom edge, *ch 1, 1 hdc in each st around, sl st into beginning st to join round, repeat from * for 1-4 more rows or until the cuff is as long as you like.
Thumb
  1. To make the thumb, with color A, ch 3, sl st in 3rd ch from hook to form a ring, ch 1, 1 sc then (1, 2, 3) hdc into ring, pull up a long loop. Join on color B in the ring, ch 1, 1sc, then (1, 2, 3) hdc into ring, pull up a long loop.
  2. Pick up color A and work 2 hdc in sc of the opposite color, pull up a long loop
  3. Repeat step 2 with color B
  4. work 1 hdc into each stitch spiraling around as before until your thumb measures (1 ½, 2, 2) inches long.
  5. The thumb should have (6, 8, 10) st around and needs to fit into a hole which is (8, 12, 16) st around. You will need to add (2, 4, 6) stitches to make the thumb the same size as the hole it will fit into. Increase by putting 3hdc in the same st, this will give you 2 extra st per row. So you will need (1, 2, 3) rows of increases for the thumb to match the hole. For the small you will just add one increase to the last row, for the medium and large you will stack the increases on top of each other by placing the increase in the middle hdc of the previous rows increase.
  6. Fasten off the colors opposite each other by stepping down from hdc to sc to sl st as you did at the cuff. Leave long tails, you will use these tails to sew the thumb onto the mitten.
  7. Turn the mitten inside out and insert the thumb into the hole. Line up the increases on the thumb along the middle of the chain of the mitten. Line up the st on the thumb with the corresponding st in the mitten. Using a yarn needle and the tails from the thumb, whip stitch the thumb onto the mitten.
  8. Turn the mitten right side out, weave in the ends. Your mitten is complete. Repeat all these steps again to make the pair.

Ham Salad

I had never had ham salad until my coworker brought some to a potluck lunch.  I love egg salad, tuna salad, chicken salad, and don't forget the turkey salad after thanksgiving (smoked turkey salad if at all possible) but I had never thought to make ham salad.  Just as the other salads are made, mix chopped ham with chopped onions and celery and a dressing of mayo, mustard and pickle relish.

Ham salad can be served on top of a green salad or made into a sandwich.  Pumpernickel bread is especially good.  This is also great for a party appetizer, serve with Ritz crackers or cucumber slices.

You can chop the meat and vegetables as small as you like, I prefer a smoother consistency so I use a food processor to grind the ham, the onions and the celery.  The smaller you chop the veggies the more liquid will come out into the dressing, making your ham salad runny.  You can prevent this by draining the chopped veggies in a mesh strainer, pressing down with a spatula to remove as much liquid as possible (reserve this juice for the stock pot!)  Then mix in the dressing ingredients, cover and chill.

Ham Salad (6 servings)
1 pound fully cooked ham
4 stalks celery, finely chopped
1 medium onion, finely chopped
3/4 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup sweet pickle relish
1 Tbsp Dijon mustard
Freshly ground black pepper to taste

1. Using a food processor, chop the celery and onion.  Drain in a mesh strainer, pressing down with a spatula to remove as much liquid as possible.

2. Grind the ham in the food processor.

3. Combine all ingredients and mix well.  Cover and chill at least 2 hours.

Spiral Baby Mittens

These mittens are great for cold weather or for no-scratch mittens.

This pattern uses US crochet terms.  If you have any questions about this pattern, leave a comment and I will do my best to help you out.

You will need small amounts of acrylic worsted weight yarn.  Use a size G crochet hook for a 0-6 month size and size H crochet hook for a 6-12 month size.  You will also need a blunt yarn needle for weaving in ends, a tape measure or ruler and a pair of scissors.

 Spiral Baby Mittens

Note: This pattern is worked in a spiral fashion with 2 colors joined onto the work through out the pattern.  You will be only working with one color as a time.  When you leave a color, pull up a long loop to help prevent your stitches from being pulled out during handling.  When you pick up that color again, make sure you pull the working tail to pull the loop back down onto the hook so you will have an even tension.

  1.  With the first color, ch 4, working into the top loop only,  2 sc in 2nd ch from the hook, 1 sc in top loop of next ch, 2 sc in top loop of next ch, pull up a long loop
  2. Turn your work upside down, working into the other loop of the foundation chain, join on contrasting color and ch 1, 2 sc in the other loop of the st you just worked into, 1 sc into the other loop of the next st, 2 sc in the other loop of the last st, pull up a long loop
  3. Pick up the first color and pull the loop back down onto the hook to ensure an even tension. Working around in a spiral fashion sc into the stitches of the contrasting color. You will not join round with a sl st and you will not turn your work. Place 2 sc in the first st, then 1 sc in each of the next 3 stitches down the long side, pull up a long loop
  4. Pick up the contrasting color again and repeat step 3
  5. Pick up the first color and place 2 sc in the next 2 st, then 1 sc in each stitch down the long side
  6. Pick up the contrasting color and repeat step 5
  7. continue spiraling around, increasing by 2 stitches on the short ends, until you have 20 stitches around
  8. Once you have 20 st you will not longer be increasing on the short ends. Place 1 sc in each stitch. Continue spiraling until the mitten measures 3 inches long (for 0-6 month size) or 3.5 inches (6-12 month size)
  9. Next you will work one row of eyelets to lace the drawstring through. To make this row you will *ch 1, skip 1 st, 1 hdc in next st, repeat from * around until you have 10 holes. The 1st and 10th hole will end up on different rows, this is expected and the nature of spiral crochet. Once the drawstring is in it will not be noticeable. The next row (in the other color) will be worked over this eyelet row by placing 2 sc into the ch 1 space.
  10. Now continue sc in each st for 3-4 more rows to make a cuff. Increase each row by 2-3 st evenly around. These increases will help the cuff flare out a bit and make it easier to get onto baby's hand.
Once the cuff is as long as you like, fasten off the 2 colors by working a final sl st into the mitten and fasten off the first color. Work the second color over the previous color, put 1 sl st into the sl st on the previous color, then 1 sl st into the mitten and fasten off. Weave in ends.

For the drawstring: Ch 60, fasten off. Tie an overhand knot at each end, weave through the eyelets and tie a bow

Flattened Dried Bananas

Dried bananas are a great snack and really easy to make with a dehydrator.  Dried banana you make at home will never taste like the banana chips you can buy at the store, thats because those banana chips are not dried, they are deep fried.  Instead of trying (and failing) to replicate those crispy crunchy fried banana chips, why not try making flattened bananas.

You will want to use fully ripened, or even over ripened bananas.  The more black the skin becomes, the sweeter the banana.  Just smash the banana onto the fruit leather tray of your dehydrator and dry them at 135 degrees for about 12 hours.
